Why do you need an online physics tutor? Well, here’s something to ponder. If you try to jump through an active, spinning propeller, with even one blade, you’ll get diced up pretty quick, right? We don’t need the Physics Tutor Guy or any other hotline to answer that one for us.
When spinning in revolution, that blade is only in one place at a time. That means, theoretically, we can jump completely through, Super Mario fashion, before the blade makes a full circle and turns us into chopped liver. It can happen. We just need to be fast enough.
So, how fast? Can we build a small engine that can make us move through? And how do we figure it out?
The answer is physics.
Physics usually sounds like something out of Star Trek. There’s time distortion, light speed travel, the question about what lies outside an expanding universe, and how to beam up. But physics also explains the way the physical world works. Every time we push a sled up a hill, pull open a door or even stand up, it’s physics at work. A lot of the stuff we take for granted, it’s just physics. Mass, density, inertia, force, resistance, gravity…it’s all just work (physics pun not intended).
Like the apple that fell on Isaac Newton’s head.
According to the old story, Newton figured out how gravity worked. Then he formulated the laws of thermodynamics (you know, for every action, there’s an opposite and equal reaction, etc., etc.). Then he enjoyed an apple pie as a treat.
Physics, when you get down to it, is just math. Math and abstract thought to make systems do what they do. Math, which is the building blocks of algorithms, which leads to juggling large amounts of data, which leads to artificial intelligence. Math isn’t just for physicists and physicists don’t just play with quantum quarks. Rather, building neural pathways, machine learning, and visual recognition, are the way of the future for software development, instead of just crafting codes, is one hot paying job for physicists who turn to computers. Or, think about the Black-Scholes equation to set buying and selling prices for future goods. For business and finance majors, it’s a holy grail of sorts. But it’s also a physics formula to determine how pollen grains diffuse through water. Creating models and computing large data sets using logic to solve abstract problems just so happens to be what a physicist does.
So, if you’re a physics tutor and a high schooler asks you why figuring out the ball spin for a bouncing tennis ball has to do with real life outside of Wimbledon, point out that it’s the starting point for things to learn amazing things about the universe.
